In clean water, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) tend to cluster together. Hence, there has been less concern about industrial-scale production of CNTs contaminating waterways, as they usually to settle out and tend not to disperse. By adding CNTs to water from a nearby river, and shaking the solution, researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology have confirmed that nanotubes settle quickly in pure water. In the water that contained natural organic matter, however, the nanotubes remained suspended in the liquid. This suggests CNT dispersion through waterways might indeed be possible.
