For the first time, scientists at the University of Cambridge, UK, have directly imaged carbon nanotubes (CNTs) entering and migrating within human cells. They have also determined that the likelihood of nanotubes causing cell death depends on the dose and exposure time. This is the first study to show definitively that carbon nanotubes have the ability to cross into the cytoplasm and nucleus of a cell; it casts doubts on the accuracy of previous CNT toxicity studies.
