Presented at the AIA 2007 National Convention, Photocatalysis: Self-Cleaning Buildings and Pollution Abatement was a presentation that reviewed how nanotechnology uses solar energy to make building materials self-cleaning and can reduce air pollution. The learning objectives of the presentation were: to define photocatalysis and describe how it works; to identify how and where self-cleaning materials can be best used to maintain the appearance of a building, reduce building maintenance costs, and reduce the environmental impact associated with building maintenance; to assess the potential of photocatalysts for depollution by removing volatile organic compounds and odors to improve urban and indoor air quality.
