In 1998, under internal funding, the Cornerstone Research Group (CRG) conducted preliminary experiments on thermoplastic shape memory polymers (SMP). These are polymorphic (shape-shifting) smart materials that generally respond to changes in temperature, but can also respond to other stimuli, such as light. In subsequent years, CRG demonstrated several new classes of thermoset polymers, including a high-temperature SMP, a high-toughness SMP, light-activated SMP, water-activated SMP, and others. They have also been developing shape memory composites, shape memory foams, dynamic syntactic foams, and liquid crystal elastomers. Applications for the reconfigurable composites included skin for morphing aircraft, deployable housing, and others.
